Breaking Free from the Epidemic of People Pleasing

Breaking Free from the Epidemic of People Pleasing

People-pleasing, the tendency to prioritize the needs and opinions of others over our own, has become an epidemic among women of all ages and backgrounds. The desire for positive evaluations from others can lead us to disconnect from our own feelings and seek fulfillment in external validation. As Christian women, it is important to remember that our ultimate accountability is to God alone. In this blog, we will explore the dangers of people-pleasing, the importance of seeking God's approval, and the freedom that comes from living a purpose-driven life.

Shifting Our Focus to God's Approval

Colossians 3:23 (NIV) - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters."

People-pleasing teaches us to serve the wrong master. As Christian women, we are called to prioritize God's approval above the opinions of others. The apostle Paul reminds us to work heartily as for the Lord, recognizing that our ultimate allegiance is to Him.

Finding Freedom in Saying "No"

Luke 6:26 (NIV) - "Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets."

Dr. Henry Cloud, in his book "Changes That Heal," highlights the dangers of feeling responsible for other people's feelings. When we prioritize others' opinions over what is right, we compromise our ability to make decisions based on God's guidance. It is essential to recognize that we are responsible to people, showing consideration and kindness, but not responsible for their emotions. Setting healthy boundaries and occasionally saying "no" may disappoint others, but it is necessary for living a correct and liberated life.

Letting Go of Human Approval and Embracing God's Love

Galatians 1:10 (NIV) - "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

Our struggle with seeking human approval, driven by fear, insecurity, and pride, remains a constant battle. However, the cross of Christ holds the power to conquer these struggles. Through Jesus' resurrection, death is defeated, and God's wrath is forever satisfied. Our security and affirmation are found in Christ alone.

Embracing the Joy of Pleasing God

Romans 12:2 (NIV) - "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

As we release the impossible goal of pleasing everyone, we can begin to live purposefully. Rather than expending our time and energy on the unattainable task of making others happy, we can focus on meaningful pursuits that align with God's will. Pleasing God and prioritizing His approval simplifies our lives and brings true happiness.

Breaking free from the epidemic of people-pleasing is essential for our spiritual and emotional well-being as Christian women. By shifting our focus to seeking God's approval, embracing authenticity, setting boundaries, finding security in His love, and living a purpose-driven life, we can experience the freedom and joy that come from pleasing God
